Pilot Contamination-Aware Graph Attention Network for Power Control in CFmMIMO

Optimization-based power control algorithms are predominantly iterative with high computational complexity, making them impractical for real-time applications in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) systems. Learning-based methods have emerged as a promising alternative, and among them, graph neural networks (GNNs) have demonstrated their excellent performance in solving power control problems. However, all existing GNN-based approaches assume ideal orthogonality among pilot sequences for user equipments (UEs), which is unrealistic given that the number of UEs exceeds the available orthogonal pilot sequences in CFmMIMO schemes. Moreover, most learning-based methods assume a fixed number of UEs, whereas the number of active UEs varies over time in practice. Additionally, supervised training necessitates costly computational resources for computing the target power control solutions for a large volume of training samples. To address these issues, we propose a graph attention network for downlink power control in CFmMIMO systems that operates in a self-supervised manner while effectively handling pilot contamination and adapting to a dynamic number of UEs. Experimental results show its effectiveness, even in comparison to the optimal accelerated projected gradient method as a baseline.

Performance Evaluation of an Integrated System for Visible Light Communication and Positioning Using an Event Camera

Event cameras, featuring high temporal resolution and high dynamic range, offer visual sensing capabilities comparable to conventional image sensors while capturing fast-moving objects and handling scenes with extreme lighting contrasts such as tunnel exits. Leveraging these properties, this study proposes a novel self-localization system that integrates visible light communication (VLC) and visible light positioning (VLP) within a single event camera. The system enables a vehicle to estimate its position even in GPS-denied environments, such as tunnels, by using VLC to obtain coordinate information from LED transmitters and VLP to estimate the distance to each transmitter. Multiple LEDs are installed on the transmitter side, each assigned a unique pilot sequence based on Walsh-Hadamard codes. The event camera identifies individual LEDs within its field of view by correlating the received signal with these codes, allowing clear separation and recognition of each light source. This mechanism enables simultaneous high-capacity MISO (multi-input single-output) communication through VLC and precise distance estimation via phase-only correlation (POC) between multiple LED pairs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first vehicle-mounted system to achieve simultaneous VLC and VLP functionalities using a single event camera. Field experiments were conducted by mounting the system on a vehicle traveling at 30 km/h (8.3 m/s). The results demonstrated robust real-world performance, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of distance estimation within 0.75 m for ranges up to 100 m and a bit error rate (BER) below 0.01 across the same range.

Sustainable LSTM-Based Precoding for RIS-Aided mmWave MIMO Systems with Implicit CSI

In this paper, we propose a sustainable long short-term memory (LSTM)-based precoding framework for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) MIMO systems. Instead of explicit channel state information (CSI) estimation, the framework exploits uplink pilot sequences to implicitly learn channel characteristics, reducing both pilot overhead and inference complexity. Practical hardware constraints are addressed by incorporating the phase-dependent amplitude model of RIS elements, while a multi-label training strategy improves robustness when multiple near-optimal codewords yield comparable performance. Simulations show that the proposed design achieves over 90% of the spectral efficiency of exhaustive search (ES) with only 2.2% of its computation time, cutting energy consumption by nearly two orders of magnitude. The method also demonstrates resilience under distribution mismatch and scalability to larger RIS arrays, making it a practical and energy-efficient solution for sustainable 6G wireless networks.

In-Context Learning for Gradient-Free Receiver Adaptation: Principles, Applications, and Theory

In recent years, deep learning has facilitated the creation of wireless receivers capable of functioning effectively in conditions that challenge traditional model-based designs. Leveraging programmable hardware architectures, deep learning-based receivers offer the potential to dynamically adapt to varying channel environments. However, current adaptation strategies, including joint training, hypernetwork-based methods, and meta-learning, either demonstrate limited flexibility or necessitate explicit optimization through gradient descent. This paper presents gradient-free adaptation techniques rooted in the emerging paradigm of in-context learning (ICL). We review architectural frameworks for ICL based on Transformer models and structured state-space models (SSMs), alongside theoretical insights into how sequence models effectively learn adaptation from contextual information. Further, we explore the application of ICL to cell-free massive MIMO networks, providing both theoretical analyses and empirical evidence. Our findings indicate that ICL represents a principled and efficient approach to real-time receiver adaptation using pilot signals and auxiliary contextual information-without requiring online retraining.

Evaluation of Mobile Environment for Vehicular Visible Light Communication Using Multiple LEDs and Event Cameras

In the fields of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Driving (AD), sensors that serve as the ``eyes'' for sensing the vehicle's surrounding environment are essential. Traditionally, image sensors and LiDAR have played this role. However, a new type of vision sensor, event cameras, has recently attracted attention. Event cameras respond to changes in the surrounding environment (e.g., motion), exhibit strong robustness against motion blur, and perform well in high dynamic range environments, which are desirable in robotics applications. Furthermore, the asynchronous and low-latency principles of data acquisition make event cameras suitable for optical communication. By adding communication functionality to event cameras, it becomes possible to utilize I2V communication to immediately share information about forward collisions, sudden braking, and road conditions, thereby contributing to hazard avoidance. Additionally, receiving information such as signal timing and traffic volume enables speed adjustment and optimal route selection, facilitating more efficient driving. In this study, we construct a vehicle visible light communication system where event cameras are receivers, and multiple LEDs are transmitters. In driving scenes, the system tracks the transmitter positions and separates densely packed LED light sources using pilot sequences based on Walsh-Hadamard codes. As a result, outdoor vehicle experiments demonstrate error-free communication under conditions where the transmitter-receiver distance was within 40 meters and the vehicle's driving speed was 30 km/h (8.3 m/s).

Robust Learning-Based Sparse Recovery for Device Activity Detection in Grant-Free Random Access Cell-Free Massive MIMO: Enhancing Resilience to Impairments

Massive MIMO is considered a key enabler to support massive machine-type communication (mMTC). While massive access schemes have been extensively analyzed for co-located massive MIMO arrays, this paper explores activity detection in grant-free random access for mMTC within the context of cell-free massive MIMO systems, employing distributed antenna arrays. This sparse support recovery of device activity status is performed by a finite cluster of access points (APs) from a large number of geographically distributed APs collaborating to serve a larger number of devices. Active devices transmit non-orthogonal pilot sequences to APs, which forward the received signals to a central processing unit (CPU) for collaborative activity detection. This paper proposes a simple and efficient data-driven algorithm tailored for device activity detection, implemented centrally at the CPU. Furthermore, the study assesses the algorithm's robustness to input perturbations and examines the effects of adopting fixed-point representation on its performance.
Deep Learning-Based Approach for User Activity Detection with Grant-Free Random Access in Cell-Free Massive MIMO

Modern wireless networks must reliably support a wide array of connectivity demands, encompassing various user needs across diverse scenarios. Machine-Type Communication (mMTC) is pivotal in these networks, particularly given the challenges posed by massive connectivity and sporadic device activation patterns. Traditional grant-based random access (GB-RA) protocols face limitations due to constrained orthogonal preamble resources. In response, the adoption of grant-free random access (GF-RA) protocols offers a promising solution. This paper explores the application of supervised machine learning models to tackle activity detection issues in scenarios where non-orthogonal preamble design is considered. We introduce a data-driven algorithm specifically designed for user activity detection in Cell-Free Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (CF-mMIMO) networks operating under GF-RA protocols. Additionally, this study presents a novel clustering strategy that simplifies and enhances activity detection accuracy, assesses the resilience of the algorithm to input perturbations, and investigates the effects of adopting floating-to-fixed-point conversion on algorithm performance. Simulations conducted adhere to 3GPP standards, ensuring accurate channel modeling, and employ a deep learning approach to boost the detection capabilities of mMTC GF-RA devices. The results are compelling: the algorithm achieves an exceptional 99\% accuracy rate, confirming its efficacy in real-world applications.

Pilot Contamination in Massive MIMO Systems: Challenges and Future Prospects

Massive multiple input multiple output (M-MIMO) technology plays a pivotal role in fifth-generation (5G) and beyond communication systems, offering a wide range of benefits, from increased spectral efficiency (SE) to enhanced energy efficiency and higher reliability. However, these advantages are contingent upon precise channel state information (CSI) availability at the base station (BS). Ensuring precise CSI is challenging due to the constrained size of the coherence interval and the resulting limitations on pilot sequence length. Therefore, reusing pilot sequences in adjacent cells introduces pilot contamination, hindering SE enhancement. This paper reviews recent advancements and addresses research challenges in mitigating pilot contamination and improving channel estimation, categorizing the existing research into three broader categories: pilot assignment schemes, advanced signal processing methods, and advanced channel estimation techniques. Salient representative pilot mitigation/assignment techniques are analyzed and compared in each category. Lastly, possible future research directions are discussed.

Smart Pilot Assignment for IoT in Massive MIMO Systems: A Path Towards Scalable IoT Infrastructure

5G sets the foundation for an era of creativity with its faster speeds, increased data throughput, reduced latency, and enhanced IoT connectivity, all enabled by Massive MIMO (M-MIMO) technology. M-MIMO boosts network efficiency and enhances user experience by employing intelligent user scheduling. This paper presents a user scheduling scheme and pilot assignment strategy designed for IoT devices, emphasizing mitigating pilot contamination, a key obstacle to improving spectral efficiency (SE) and system scalability in M-MIMO networks. We utilize a user clustering-based pilot allocation scheme to boost IoT device scalability in M-MIMO systems. Additionally, our smart pilot allocation minimizes interference and enhances SE by treating pilot assignment as a graph coloring problem, optimizing it through integer linear programming (ILP). Recognizing the computational complexity of ILP, we introduced a binary search-based heuristic predicated on interference threshold to expedite the computation, while maintaining a near-optimal solution. The simulation results show a significant decrease in the required pilot overhead (about 17%), and substantial enhancement in SE (about 8-14%).
Cell-Free Multi-User MIMO Equalization via In-Context Learning

Large pre-trained sequence models, such as transformers, excel as few-shot learners capable of in-context learning (ICL). In ICL, a model is trained to adapt its operation to a new task based on limited contextual information, typically in the form of a few training examples for the given task. Previous work has explored the use of ICL for channel equalization in single-user multi-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this work, we demonstrate that ICL can be also used to tackle the problem of multi-user equalization in cell-free MIMO systems with limited fronthaul capacity. In this scenario, a task is defined by channel statistics, signal-to-noise ratio, and modulation schemes. The context encompasses the users' pilot sequences, the corresponding quantized received signals, and the current received data signal. Different prompt design strategies are proposed and evaluated that encompass also large-scale fading and modulation information. Experiments demonstrate that ICL-based equalization provides estimates with lower mean squared error as compared to the linear minimum mean squared error equalizer, especially in the presence of limited fronthaul capacity and pilot contamination.
